Ron Sexsmith: “Long Player Late Bloomer”

My review of the new Ron Sexsmith album is posted at CT this morning.

I wish I could give this one a hearty recommendation– Sexsmith is a long-time favorite– but his desire to make a big hit pop record gets the better of him on this one; he chose to work with Bob Rock, producer for everyone from Michael Buble to Metallica, and he really polishes the life out of all these recordings, giving the album a fairly samey, adult pop feel. Of course, it’s always an absolute joy to hear Sexsmith sing, and the songs themselves are terrific, but as an album it’s not his best work, certainly a far cry from classics like Retriever and Blue Boy.
