Jamie Cullum: “The Pursuit”

Mind the cover art: In the image that adorns his new album The Pursuit, piano man Jamie Cullum stares nonchalantly forward as his chosen instrument bursts into shrapnel behind him. Of course, it’s a metaphoric gesture, not a literal one; Cullum’s prowess on the keys remains unimpeachable, his skills as a composer shining brighter than ever. What he’s laid waste to is his reputation as a sort of male counterpart to Norah Jones — a purveyor of unobtrusive, Starbucks-ready lite-jazz. That’s the thing he’s all too happy to toss into the fire.
