Broken Bells: “Broken Bells”

You could almost — almost — imagine Broken Bells being passed off as the fourth Shins album. Given how many line-up changes the band has gone through, it’s probably fair to call it essentially the brainchild of James Mercer at this point, surrounded by whatever supporting musicians he can find to help him flesh out his ideas. On proper Shins albums, he’s backed by a traditional guitar/drums/bass rock band line-up; in Broken Bells, it’s him and one-man-band Danger Mouse. Really, the difference isn’t as great as you’d think — or hope.
