Mindy Smith: “Stupid Love”

stupid love

Mindy Smith isn’t a country artist. Not really. She’s ingrained in the Nashville music scene, to be sure, but, technically, she comes closer to alt-country, or, if you prefer, Americana. You could even get away with calling her, simply, a folk singer. The thing is, her voice doesn’t have any twang to it. And neither does her music. There’s no sense of dynamics to it, no grit, no depth, no texture. It’s weightless, and it’s vague, which is why it fits under such wishy-washy, ill-defined genre tags.

Well put. I’ve been continually frustrated by Mindy Smith. After hearing a few tracks from this one, I think I’ll pass.

A minor correction: If memory serves, Long Island Shores was produced by Steve Buckingham, and Buddy Miller only appeared as duet vocal on a single track. Buckingham seems to have a knack for putting a soft-focus on everything he touches. But, based on your review, I’d say he was a better choice than her current collaborators.

Perhaps Smith should take your implied suggestion and let Buddy produce her next album.

D’OH! Thanks. Correction noted, and being fixed…

Well in that case: Yes. Buddy SHOULD produce an album for her, if she can come up with some songs that are worthy of his talents.

What about her Christmas CD, Josh? NPR liked it. (Then again, you and NPR don’t always see eye-to-eye, as seen from your recent comments on a post over at Overstreet’s site.)

  4. Josh Hurst says :

I never heard the Christmas one, Doug– have you? I *do* disagree with NPR on a fairly regular basis, but that doesn’t mean I don’t take their recommendations seriously.
