Introducing The Tallest Man on Earth
Does the world really need another nasally-voiced, finger-picking folky with nothing to his name but an acoustic guitar, a pen, and a few old Dylan records? Well, if the folky in question is The Tallest Man on Earth– aka Kristian Matsson– then the answer is a resounding yes. On his debut full-length, Matsson works with a formula we’ve all heard a few hundred times before, but he does it better than almost anyone else I can think of; this is an engrossing, mysterious, and completely wonderful record. This guy has exactly what it takes to do this kind of thing and do it well, and this is an album that stands out from an overcrowded field as truly memorable– in fact, it just gets better the more you listen.
I’ll post a full review later on to try to explain just what makes the guy so great; for now, Amanda Petrusich sums it up pretty well in her review. You can read more and hear some audio samples at Obscure Sound.
